2020 marks the 64th anniversary of our hospital. We have been preparing a system to deal with all psychiatric and psychosomatic cases without fail, recognizing the significance of pediatric psychiatry and mental health care to contribute to the local community through psychiatric care. We are also actively engaged in various challenges, including developing our medical treatment environment and expanding our facilities. These days, we receive many requests for internships and hospital tours from health practitioners from outside Osaka. We will continue to provide mental care diligently so that we are recognized for having one of the most extensive facilities in the nation and gaining the trust of our patients and many medical institutions.
We will continue to give priority to patients, build an extensive network with other medical institutions and the local government as the core hospital for the community, and provide quality medical services which will contribute to psychiatric care, health and welfare.

We have always practiced the best and the latest healthcare required by the times, as demonstrated by our establishment of Kansai’s first mental health care ward in 1997, which also provides treatment for acute cases, the psychiatric emergency ward in 2007, and the paediatric psychiatry ward in 2011. We opened our psychiatry department for providing specialist out-patient care to establish our expertise. Specialists from the Japan Society of Sleep Research provide Sleep Disorder Out-patient Care, and experts, including those from the Japanese Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, provide out-patient care for Women’s Health, Advice for Home Visits, Oral Psychosomatic Disorders, Tobacco Cessation, and Re-employment. 13 units and outpatient departments, including the Psychiatric Emergency Unit, Mental Care Unit, Paediatric Psychiatry Unit, Medical Psychiatric Unit, and Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, work together to respond rapidly to all psychiatric cases. |
For 690 permitted beds, we have many staff who provide advanced expertise, including 64 doctors (49 full-time, 15 part-time), 362 nurses, including 10 certified nurses in our nursing department and 4 nursing supervisors, 35 junior nurses, 50 care staff (nursing assistants) and clerks. We also have 14 clinical psychologists, 10 medical records managers, 39 psychiatric social workers, 25 occupational therapists, 6 physiotherapists and 3 speech therapists (figures are correct as of the end of April, 2020). We have 19 full-time doctors whose average age is 39, and they are enthusiastically engaged in providing treatment and carrying out research in our medical departments. |
Our day-care centers, communal homes, home visit nurses stations, and various facilities provide support and care for discharged patients and those with disabilities in the community to rehabilitate and participate in society. Our employment support office, En-Work, assists in not only day-to-day living but also provides emotional support to enable those in need to gain and sustain employment to live. The Sakai City Developmental Disorder Support Center Apricot Sakai, a project commissioned by Sakai City, has been actively providing employment and advice for those with developmental disorders. The number of those seeking help has increased. It is providing substantial support, involving the doctors of Hannan Hospital in providing medical advice. Sakai City also commissions us in operating our Dementia Care Center. We provide differential diagnosis, as well as in-patient treatment where necessary, and primary care doctor training. |
At Hannan Hospital, we believe that not only the premises and the facilities, but also the environment, including its visual appearance, play an important part in treatment. In our 8.1 acre grounds, there are approximately 10,000 flowering trees and 8,500 flowers. The garden is painstakingly looked after by two full-time gardeners, who replant the garden 2 times a year according to the gardening plan. It can be enjoyed throughout the year and many patients and families can be seen enjoying a stroll in the garden. All the wards are up to 3 storied high. It is believed, from an architectural viewpoint, that people feel calmer when they are closer to the ground, and the grounds are designed with natural light and airflow in mind. The windows of our wards have been enlarged to let in plenty of light, and we are continuing to actively engage in the improvement of our premises to create an excellent treatment and work environment. |
In 2015, we were approved by the Japan Council for Quality Health Care, and since 2006, we have been playing the roles of a "psychiatric training hospital" approved by the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, as a ‘certified nurse training hospital’ approved by the Japanese Psychiatric Nurses Association, and a ‘certified hospital’ approved by the Japanese Society of Sleep Research. Our hospital is outstanding for its facilities and functions relating to medical research and development, as we are equipped with a sleep laboratory, of which only four exist in Osaka Prefecture, including that of the university hospital, and one of the few independent libraries in Japan. We have maintained high numbers of annual hospitalizations and discharges for a psychiatric hospital, with 2,466 patients hospitalized and discharged in a year. (both FY 2019 results). |
